Where is SEK...

Southeast Kansas is a region of the U.S. state of Kansas, roughly defined by Woodson County in the northwest, Bourbon County in the northeast, Cherokee County in the southeast, and Montgomery County in the southwest. Geographically it is dominated by a broad rolling landscape located between the Flint Hills to the west and edges into the Ozarks in the southeast.


The areas larger towns are Pittsburg, Parsons, Coffeyville, Independence, Chanute, Fort Scott, and Iola.*

SEK has 6.43% of the state's land area amounting to 5,260.30 sq. mi.

The 2000 census reported a population of 180,815 inhabitants.

6.726% of Kansas population lives in the SE corner.

Southeast Kansas is part of the tallgrass prairie ecosystem of North America.

Lowest Point: The Verdigris River flowing through Montgomery county at 680 feet.

Highest Point: Northwest Woodson county has places around 1236 feet.

Parsons, Kansas is known as the state's Purple Martin Capital.

The average rainfall is 40" in southeast Kansas.

'Kansas' means "People of the South Wind".

Southeast Kansas is bordered to the east by Missouri and Oklahoma to the south.

SEK has the state's only inhabited island SE of St. Paul in Neosho county.
